Jien and I decided to stop for a late dinner after an outing with the little ones at the premium outlet.

The restaurant occupies three shoplots and along the same row are several other “tai chow” restaurants offering similar things. Expect to wait a bit for a table at Chuan Kie when you’re dining during peak hours – we were fortunate to get a table right outside the five foot walk but it also meant having to put up with people passing by your table on their way out.

Chuan Kie’s signature dishes include the claypot prawn with glass noodle (RM38 – one prawn) and crispy pork belly (RM26 – small). We also ordered the steamed egg (RM18), marmite chicken (RM22 – small) and claypot kangkung (RM18 – small).

Look Who's Talking Now!: Restoran Makanan Muslim Di Gohtong Jaya, Genting Highlands

Service is quick but food takes a while to arrive since the restaurant seems to be perpetually crowded. I find the pork belly decent though not quite as crispy as I expected it to be. This place in Bentong serves a better version, in my opinion.

Given the chilly weather, the claypot prawns with glass noodles is a good option to keep the body warm. Chuan Kie’s version leans towards the spicy, gingery side though I would have liked more rice wine in it for added oomph. If you’re dining in a larger group, I’m pretty sure the broth would taste richer with the addition of more prawns.

The marmite chicken is pretty average in my opinion – chicken breast is used so this dish is too dry for my liking. Steamed egg is also your standard tai chow fare; nothing great but good with rice for the little ones.

Gohtong Jaya Biscuit, เก็นติ้งไฮแลนด์

Chuan Kie’s claypot kangkung could use a bit more char, though the addition of pork lard gives it a nice crunch and aroma. Our bill came up to about RM160 for all the above, inclusive of three rice.
